DESIGN NOTES

CHRISTOPHER BÔLE

CEO & HEAD OF DESIGN

“ It seemed natural to fit our first micro-rotor caliber into a thin, elegant and original luxury sports watch case like the one of the Wristmaster Traveller while displaying the beauty of the micro-rotor through a sapphire crystal exhibition case. ”

The Bôle family has a watchmaking history spanning over several decades. This legacy is now managed by the third generation, YEMA’s CEO & Head of Design Christopher Bôle. Cradled by watchmaking since his earliest childhood, Christopher has always been attracted by YEMA’s rich design history.

Christopher designed the new Traveller Micro-Rotor as a luxury sports watch with integrated bracelet with an ultra-sleek and elegant look, humbly ambitioning to become the ultimate expression of French contemporary horology, a synthesis of French art and watchmaking craftsmanship.

The asymmetrical octagon shape steel case thickness has seen a substantial decrease from 12mm to 9.20mm Vs. the original Traveller model, which creates a more elegant symmetry to the naked eye with a 43.50mm lug-to-lug and 39mm case, offering perfect proportions for each wrist size.

Traveller Vs. Traveller Micro-Rotor

Traveller Vs Microrotor

Powered by a micro-rotor in-house caliber with 70 hours of power reserve, the entire watch measures just 9.20mm in thickness. Thanks to its smart architecture resulting in an ultra-thin 3.70mm thickness, the micro-rotor automatic caliber is thinner than two US nickels (or two Euro coins) stacked on top of one another.

We have used the complex case geometry to our advantage by executing every single angle with the same set of alternating brushed-polished finishes, that captures the eye and gives great elegance and singularity to the case while preserving the marked sporting spirit.

The slightly curved, horizontally embossed dial, the applied hour markers with matching hands and the absence of a date complication are fundamental design elements that reinforce the luxurious minimalism and sporting elegance aspect of this unique timepiece.

WATCHMAKER DEVELOPER

“With this in-house Manufacture micro-rotor, YEMA opens a chapter into fine watchmaking targeting watch connoisseurs, right after we’ll go more for a mainstream approach. In our vision, if we are able to produce the thinnest French automatic winding micro-rotor, we’ll be able to produce the finest central oscillating weight calibers. Often times the opposite is not true.”

3.70MM ULTRA-THIN CALIBER

Due to its architecture resulting in a contained thickness of just 3.70mm, this new micro-rotor caliber will equip much thinner and elegant cases.

TUNGSTEN MICRO-ROTOR

Solid tungsten is considered a premium rotor in watchmaking. Its density exceeds that of solid gold and thus offers premium rewinding efficiency.

 3.70 CALIBRE ULTRA-FIN

GLUCYDUR BALANCE WHEEL

The balance wheel is made of Glucydur, a non-magnetic metal alloy which offers high resistant to deformation, corrosion and magnetic fields.

FRENCH - SWISS PRECISION

The balance wheel and hairspring are sourced from Swiss specialists, offering excellent shock resistance and close to chronometric performance.

190 MICRO-COMPONENTS

Mechanical watch movements are some of the most fascinating and complex machines on earth, they are made up of an intricate series of springs and gears that turn energy into precisely regulated movements. This allows the watch to run with exceptional efficiency, and accurately keep track of the passage of time. YEMA's Caliber Manufacture Morteau 20 is made up of 190 micro-components individually crafted by our own engineers in our Morteau workshops.

LOCAL PRODUCTION

Over the past two years, YEMA has made significant investments aimed at insourcing a good part of its production and constantly improving the quality of its manufacturing processes by using new equipment as well as expanding and modernising its workshops and production lines.

In addition, the Franco-Swiss Jura region being increasingly integrated, YEMA now works with new local partners to secure a more responsible and higher quality production. Werthanor, a Swiss company located 15 km from our workshops, which works with the biggest watch brands, is one of our main suppliers.

LIMITED EDITION 1948

This collector’s edition limited to 1,948 timepieces, each one engraved with a unique number on the micro-rotor winding mass, features 3 distinct dial colours matching the micro-rotor caliber.

YEMA BEZEL

The bezel is inspired by a YEMA Sous-Marine model from the 1980’s and is made from a single piece of stainless steel, yet it has three distinct finishes, with the top and bottom bevels featuring an elegant vertical brushing and an entirely polished transition where the bezel’s horizontal and vertical surfaces meet.

ELEGANT DIAL

The dial’s slightly curved embossing and subtle grading from light to dark revealed when exposed to full light, create a powerful yet refined aesthetic that perfectly complements the sheen of the bezel and case metal. The applied hour markers with matching steel hands, both treated with a luminescent coating, and the absence of a date complication are fundamental design elements that reinforce the luxurious minimalism and sporting elegance aspect of this unique timepiece.

REFINED INTEGRATED BRACELET

The continuous pattern of vertical brushed surfaces and polished angles naturally extends all the way from the top of the bezel, to the case and further into the integrated steel bracelet, creating the appearance of seamless integration.

The gently tapered links on the integrated bracelet (23.9mm to 23mm) continue the effect, vertical brushed surfaces continue meeting polished angles all the way to the butterfly clasp.

EXIBITION CASE-BACK

A micro-rotor is a smaller or more compact version of the usual rotor or oscillating mass that winds automatic timepieces. Unlike the central rotor, it is integrated into the movement, which allows watchmakers drastically reduce the thickness of the caliber and fully display the beauty of the movement through an exhibition case.

SUPER-LUMINOVA

The hands and hour markers are treated with Swiss Super-LumiNova BGW9 Grade A so as to offer perfect readability in low light conditions.

PERFECT FIT FOR ALL WRIST SIZES

The 39 mm case diameter and 43.5 mm lug-to-lug width wear a bit larger than you would expect because of the fixed end-links increase the effective lug-to-lug width to almost 45 mm.

ELEGANT FINISHING & DECORATION

Instead of the traditional "guilloche pattern" decoration, we opted for a minimalist, uniform high-quality coating to accentuate the innovative aspect of this Manufacture micro-rotor caliber, resulting in a uniform and elegant look & feel.

The exceptional satin-brushing and polished microblasting treatment of mainplate and bridges is finished in three distinct colours through latest ALD (or Atomic Layer Deposition) technology by Swiss nanometric decorative coating specialist Positive Coating, supplier of Swiss premium brands.

This revolutionary gaseous deposition process ensures a uniform coating with a precision of around one nanometre, preserving therefore the surface's satin-brushed decoration and the angles' polished finish.
